A Long History of Community
Known as the “castle” playground, Legacy Play Village was funded and built by and for the community in 2002. Spearheaded by the Junior League of Lubbock, upon completion it was the largest community-built playground in the United States! More than 15,000 volunteers participated in bringing this remarkable destination play place to fruition. It is truly a challenge to meet any long-term resident of Lubbock who did not visit the Legacy Play Village at some point in its 17-year history for play time, birthday parties, end-of-school functions, and family reunions. People who played on the playground as children, or helped build the playground in 2002, continued to come back for years with their own children or grandchildren. Legacy Play Village is a well-loved community icon.
Leveling the Playing Field
A lot has changed in playground design theory over the past 20 years. Much was learned during and after the construction of the original playground. The steering committee has envisioned a wonderful new playground, a new legacy for generations to come. The new playground design, created with input from the community, ensures that the new Legacy Play Village provides a welcoming play space that accommodates all— from children to adults— for shoulder-to-shoulder adventure, imagination, and creativity.
The redesigned Legacy Play Village will encompass a broad scope of offerings— not simply a single service—that work together to create positive change in the lives of members of our community.
A Legacy Worth Your Investment
Lessons learned during the life of the original playground are being employed to ensure that annual, short- and long-term maintenance plans are in place and funded before the playground is completed. A revitalized and active Friends of Legacy Play Village organization will ensure that those plans are managed carefully and thoughtfully to keep the playground a dynamic and useful community resource. An investment in Legacy Play Village is an investment in the future of our community which will yield benefits to citizens, patrons, and businesses for years to come.
